Teaching Tools
On this page we will offer a number of tools to support your use of Exploring Life in the classroom.Xylem Demo. A simple and
effective way to
demonstrate the way plant xylem works is to blow bubbles through a
piece of
hard wood. Just go to a lumber yard and get a 3/4 inch oak
board and cut
it lengthwise into as many 5-inch long, 3/4 inch high pieces as you can
get
(one per student). The lumber yard might even do it for you.
Then get
yourself of bottle of bubbles. Dip one end of your wood block
into the
bubbles and blow through the other end. Students can compete to see who
can
blow the longest strand of bubbles.
Plant Cell Structure. Assemble a model plant cell by blowing up a clear balloon (the cell membrane), into which you have inserted various items that represent cell contents (different colored tic tacks, strand of dental floss, etc.), and then placed inside a green plastic basket (the cell wall). You can use the containers that strawberries come in at the grocery store for the basket.
One of the advantages that a program like Exploring Life offers is the opportunity to readily differentiate instruction to meet the various needs within your classroom and thereby, achieve success with more students. But what is differentiated instruction? >>more.

the Exploring Life
resrouces can be flexibly adapted to reach students at different

Organized by unit, web site maps provide a quick, at-a-glance view of all the activities and features included in each chapter of the Exploring Life web site. You can use these to help you remember what all is available on line or to quickly locate a favorite activity.
